INDIANA STATE MEET

Izaiah Steury Proves He's Indiana's Best With State Meet Win

By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor

The incredible story of Izaiah Steury added an impressive new detail on Saturday as the junior from Angola High concluded an unbeaten Indiana high school cross country season with a state title.

Steury, once an orphan in Ethiopia, has flourished since he was adopted by an American family in Northeast Indiana.

On Saturday at the La Vern Gibson Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Steury overcame the state's strongest runners to win in 15:23.4.

Steury was 38th at the Indiana state meet as a freshman and seventh last year as a sophomore. For Angola, a small school near the state borders of Michigan and Ohio, he is the first IHSAA cross country champion.

Highland senior Lucas Guerra finished second in 15:34.4. Carmel sophomore Kole Mathison was third in 15:36.4.

The top-ranked team in the state, Columbus North, won the team championship thanks to the deepest 1-7 lineup and scored 63 points. Carmel finished second with 112 points and Brebeuf Jesuit was third with 126.

The boys and girls race were separated by several hours in order for one group to leave and another to arrive at the course, due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Junior Karina James from Lowell also remained undefeated by winning the girls championship race in 18:00.1. She was fourth in 2019.

Although she is Lowell's first female champion in cross country, the school also produced last year's boys champion, Gabriel Sanchez.

James beat Zoe Duffus of Carroll (Fort Wayne) by just two seconds. Annie Christie of Carmel was third and led the Greyhounds to the state team championship.

Carmel scored 52 points and won for the ninth time since 2008, ending Carroll's two-year run. Carroll scored 77 points for second place.

Columbus North finished third with 168 points.
